Two-thirds of the United Kingdom’s workforce intend to upgrade their digital capabilities within the next 24 months, according to a study by Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Gallup. The report, titled the AWS Global Digital Skills Study, surveyed more than 30,000 employees across 19 nations to gauge the current state of digital proficiency and the demand for training. Originally posted on March 2, 2023, the research indicates that 67 per cent of the UK workforce are looking to improve their digital skills over the next two years, according to research from AWS and Gallup.
Efficiency drives upskilling
Increased operational efficiency is the primary motivation for 49 per cent of staff members, while increased salary, improved employability, increased career progression and improved job security were also major drivers. Nearly half of staff (49 per cent) cited increased efficiency as the main reason behind levelling-up their digital skills. The research also examined employer perspectives, identifying barriers for digital workers. These obstacles include a perceived disconnect between the value of industry certifications and actual job requirements, as well as a tendency for employers to demand a bachelor’s degree for roles that may not strictly require it.
Workers who have recently acquired new digital skills report tangible benefits. Data shows that 72 per cent of these individuals experience higher job satisfaction, while a similar percentage feels more secure in their employment. Sheila Flavell, Chief Operating Officer at the FDM Group, stated that this eagerness to learn is vital for opening doors into the technology sector. She added that businesses must support staff development to fully benefit from new technology investments.
Commenting on the research, Sheila Flavell CBE, Chief Operating Officer for FDM Group, said: “It is hugely encouraging to see the UK workforce eager to upskill their digital skills and better their career opportunities. This willingness is an important factor in breaking down barriers into the tech industry, and the onus is on businesses to support staff in their development of key digital skills.”
