The Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana (PMVVY) is a pension scheme designed for senior citizens aged 60 and above. It offers a guaranteed pension with a 10-year tenure and allows investments up to Rs 15 lakh. The minimum pension is Rs 1,000 per month, while the maximum can reach Rs 12,000 monthly, with quarterly, half-yearly, and yearly caps at Rs 30,000, Rs 60,000, and Rs 1,20,000 respectively. The overall pension cap applies to the entire family, including the pensioner, spouse, and eligible dependents like unmarried children and jobless sons up to 25 years old.
Eligibility and Application Process
To qualify, applicants must meet the minimum age requirement and provide documents like Aadhaar, PAN, and proof of retirement. The scheme can be purchased online or offline through the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India. The application process involves generating an Access ID, selecting a pension plan, and submitting KYC documents. Online applicants can visit the LIC website, click on “Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana” under ‘Buy Policy Online’, and follow the steps to generate an Access ID and complete the application.
The PMVVY provides tax benefits under Section 80C, allowing exemptions up to Rs 1.5 lakh on deposits. However, taxes apply to the interest received. The scheme also includes a death benefit, where the purchase price is refunded to the beneficiary if the pensioner passes away during the policy term. Additionally, the scheme offers a maturity benefit, returning the purchase price along with the final pension installment if the pensioner survives the policy term.
Key Features and Benefits
One of the standout features is the flexible pension payment options—monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, or yearly. The first pension payout is received after 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, or 1 year from the policy start date, depending on the chosen frequency. Pension payments are made via NEFT or Aadhaar-enabled systems. In exceptional cases, such as critical health issues, the scheme allows premature exit with a 98% surrender value.

After three years, policyholders can avail a loan of up to 75% of the purchase price. The interest on the loan is deducted from the pension payments. The scheme also offers a free look period of 15 days (or 30 days for online purchases), allowing policyholders to return the policy for a full refund minus stamp duty and paid pension.
Additional Eligibility and Limitations
The PMVVY has a unique family pension cap, ensuring the total pension amount for a household does not exceed the maximum allowance. Applicants must submit documents such as Aadhaar, PAN, driving license, bank passbook, proof of address, recent photographs, and proof of retirement. The scheme’s purchase price starts at Rs 1.5 lakh for a Rs 1,000 monthly pension, scaling up to Rs 15 lakh for Rs 10,000 monthly.
Further Benefits and Features
In case of the pensioner’s death, the beneficiary receives the full purchase price. Policyholders can exit prematurely in critical health situations, receiving a surrender value.
