Malaysia plans to import an additional 70,000 tonnes of rice from Pakistan, according to sources. This move comes as Pakistan seeks to expand its agricultural exports to Malaysia, with a focus on rice and halal meat.
High-Level Talks in Kuala Lumpur
A Pakistani delegation, including officials from the Ministries of National Food Security and Research and Commerce, held discussions with Malaysian authorities in Kuala Lumpur. The talks aimed to increase Pakistani rice exports and explore opportunities for halal meat and other agricultural products.
The delegation met with representatives from BERNAS, Malaysia’s key rice agency, and JAKIM, the halal certification body. These meetings are part of a broader effort to strengthen trade ties between the two countries.
Renewed Demand for Pakistani Rice
Malaysia’s additional rice purchase reflects a renewed demand for Pakistani rice. In 2024, Malaysia imported 1.695 million tonnes of rice, with Pakistan supplying 382,051 tonnes, valued at $235.4 million.
This new deal could help Pakistani exporters regain market share lost in the previous year. Pakistan’s total rice exports in 2024 reached 6.56 million tonnes, worth $4.19 billion, with Malaysia as one of its leading destinations.
Stable Supplies and Halal Meat Opportunities
Pakistani officials aim to establish long-term supply arrangements with Malaysian buyers, ensuring a consistent presence in the market. This strategy benefits both exporters and importers by providing stability and reliability.
Halal meat is another significant opportunity. During a visit in October 2025, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed interest in importing Pakistani halal meat worth up to $200 million. Pakistan has since developed a plan to meet Malaysia’s halal standards and quality requirements.
As Pakistan and Malaysia work to strengthen their agricultural trade, the focus on rice and halal meat could lead to a more diversified and robust trade relationship. With ongoing negotiations and participation in events like MIHAS, the potential for growth in this sector appears promising.
Expanding Agricultural Trade
Agricultural trade between Pakistan and Malaysia is already substantial, reaching RM4.40 billion by December 2025. Malaysia exports palm oil, animal feed, and spices, while Pakistan supplies rice, cereals, and seafood.
The recent engagement at MIHAS 2026 further highlights the potential for expansion. With 2,400 exhibition booths and 50,340 trade visitors, Pakistani officials promoted a wide range of agricultural and halal products.
