Sassa delays August payments for beneficiaries under review

Sassa announced that beneficiaries whose social grants are under review will receive their August payments on Friday, 7 August, extending the usual three‑day payment window by one day.

Delay explained and what beneficiaries should expect

The South African Social Security Agency said the delay applies only to accounts flagged for a review. Those grants will not be processed on the standard days of 4, 5 or 6 August. Instead, the agency will release the funds on the fourth day of the payment cycle.

Sassa warned recipients not to panic if they do not see a credit on the usual dates. The agency added that a review notification is sent by SMS, so having up‑to‑date contact information is essential. Beneficiaries are asked to keep their cellphone numbers, residential addresses and other personal details current in the agency’s database.

Failure to respond to a review request may lead to a grant being suspended or lapsing under the Social Assistance Act. The statement emphasized that the review process remains mandatory throughout August, even after the delayed payment is received.

What the review process entails

Review appointments require beneficiaries to bring documentation that proves their continued eligibility. Required items typically include a valid South African identity document, recent bank statements, proof of residence and, where relevant, evidence of marital status.

Depending on the specific grant, additional paperwork may be needed. For child‑related benefits, birth certificates and school attendance confirmations are common. In cases where a spouse or child has died, a death certificate must be presented.

Applicants who cannot travel to a Sassa office because of illness or disability may arrange for an authorised representative to act on their behalf. The agency also encourages the use of its digital platforms to reduce queues and travel time.

Free Wi‑Fi is available at Sassa offices, allowing clients to access online services on their smartphones. Staff are on hand to help users operate the digital tools, which can streamline the review and payment process.

While the delay is limited to a single day, the underlying review mechanism is a legal requirement aimed at confirming that assistance reaches only eligible recipients. This safeguards the programme against fraud and helps maintain an accurate beneficiary database.
