Hope Spring eCards has introduced a new series of birthday eCards celebrating Black culture, addressing the persistent lack of representation in digital greeting card offerings. The UK-based charity platform developed the collection after identifying a shortage of designs featuring Black characters, families, and culturally specific imagery in both physical and online greeting cards.
The project aligns with broader efforts to increase diversity in consumer products. Despite the expansion of digital greeting card options, many users continue to face difficulties finding designs that mirror their own lives or those of their loved ones. Mary Adeotan, the manager at Hope Spring eCards, stated that meaningful representation matters. “Everyone deserves to see themselves and the people they love represented in the cards they send and receive. A birthday card may seem like a small gesture, but being recognized and reflected in that gesture can make it much more meaningful,” she said.

Adeotan emphasized that representation should not be limited to specific times of the year. “We wanted to create birthday eCards that feel warm, joyful, and authentic. Representation should not be limited to a particular month or treated as a seasonal theme. It should be part of the choices available to people throughout the year,” she explained.
Connecting Greetings to Clean Water Impact
The initiative also supports Hope Spring’s broader mission. Alongside sending eCards, users can contribute to the charity’s clean-water projects in water-deprived communities. Joshua Ojo, manager at Hope Spring Water, added that the collection ties everyday communication to meaningful impact. “Anyone who chooses to make a donation can support clean-water projects while sending a birthday message.”
