Mediclinic City Hospital hits 100 kidney transplants

Mediclinic City Hospital in Dubai has completed its 100th kidney transplant, marking an important step for its renal care program.

The facility, part of the Mediclinic Middle East network, performed its first kidney transplant in June 2016. Since then, the program has provided patients with end-stage renal disease an alternative to long-term dialysis, helping restore health, independence and quality of life.

From surgery to long-term care

The transplant program depends on a coordinated team of specialists. Doctors, nurses, and support staff collaborate from donor identification through surgery and follow-up care. Dr. Jacques Kobersy, Chief Medical Officer at Mediclinic Middle East, said the procedure offers patients a chance to “regain independence, stability and quality of life.”

He attributed the milestone to progress in organ donation and transplant medicine, along with the hospital’s team-based approach. The program also supports Mediclinic’s goal of expanding access to specialized care in the region.

A transplant often means freedom from dialysis, which usually requires multiple weekly sessions. The change can transform lives, though the hospital did not provide specific data on survival rates or recovery times.

A regional push for organ donation

The 100th transplant arrives as the UAE works to improve its organ donation system. While the country has made progress, demand for organs still exceeds supply. Programs like this one help address the shortage, though challenges remain in raising public awareness and increasing donor registrations.

Mediclinic City Hospital’s transplant programme forms part of Mediclinic Middle East’s broader commitment to specialised, integrated care and to support awareness of organ donation, strengthen transplant pathways and expand access to advanced renal care for patients.
